POPE FRANCIS’ ADVICE TO ALL POLITICAL LEADERS

In his speech to the US Congress on Sept. 24, 2015, Pope Francis reminded all politicians and leaders of the nation of their duty:

“you are called to DEFEND AND PRESERVE THE DIGNITY OF YOUR FELLOW CITIZENS IN THE TIRELESS AND DEMANDING PURSUIT OF THE COMMON GOOD, for this is the CHIEF AIM OF ALL POLITICS.”
The challenges of our times “demand that we pool our resources and talents, and RESOLVE TO SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER, with RESPECT FOR OUR DIFFERENCES AND OUR CONVICTIONS OF CONSCIENCE.”

“A good political leader is one who, with the interests of all in mind, seizes the moment in a spirit of openness and pragmatism. A good political leader always opts to initiate processes rather than possessing spaces.”

During his September 16, 2013 homily, Pope Francis reminded ALL POLITICIANS AND LEADERS THAT THEY MUST LOVE THE PEOPLE WHOM THEY SERVE, saying that:

“A LEADER WHO DOESN’T LOVE CANNOT GOVERN – AT BEST THEY CAN DISCIPLINE, THEY CAN GIVE A LITTLE BIT OF ORDER, BUT THEY CAN’T GOVERN. YOU CAN’T GOVERN WITHOUT LOVING THE PEOPLE AND WITHOUT HUMILITY!

And every man, every woman who has to take up the service of government, must ask themselves two questions:
‘DO I LOVE MY PEOPLE IN ORDER TO SERVE THEM BETTER? AM I HUMBLE AND DO I LISTEN TO EVERYBODY, TO DIVERSE OPINIONS IN ORDER TO CHOOSE THE BEST PATH.’ If you don’t ask those questions, your governance will not be good. The man or woman who governs – who loves his people is a humble man or woman.”
